How to sell digital downloads on Etsy, step by step

A practical walkthrough for selling printable digital downloads on Etsy, from shop setup and files to listing photos, pricing, tags and customer messages.

To sell digital downloads on Etsy, open a shop, create a listing, choose the digital item type, upload your files, and add photos, a price, a title and tags. When someone buys, Etsy gives them the files as an instant download, so there is nothing to ship.

1. Set up your shop

Create an Etsy seller account, choose a shop name and fill in your payment and billing details. Etsy will ask for identity and bank information so it can pay you. Take a little time over your shop banner, icon and About section; buyers of wall art often look at the whole shop before they trust a single listing.

Write short shop policies that fit digital items. Because files are delivered instantly, many sellers do not accept returns on digital downloads, but say clearly that you will help if a file does not open or something is wrong.

2. Prepare your files

For printable wall art, make high-resolution files at 300 PPI in the main aspect ratios (usually 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11×14 and ISO A). Use JPEG or PDF, give each file a clear name that includes the ratio, and check every file at full size for stray marks or soft edges.

At the time of writing (October 2026), Etsy allows up to 5 files per digital listing, 20 MB each. Check Etsy's current rules before you plan your file set.

3. Create the listing

In Shop Manager, add a new listing and choose that it is a digital file the buyer downloads. Then work through the sections:

  • Photos: 5–6 or more images, starting with your strongest room mockup.
  • Title: a clear description with the main keywords at the start.
  • Category and attributes: pick the closest category and fill in colour, room and style attributes, because they help buyers filter.
  • Description: what is included, the sizes, that it is a digital download and nothing physical will be shipped, and simple printing tips.
  • Files: upload your print files in the digital files section.
  • Tags: use all 13, mixing broad and specific phrases.

4. Listing images and pricing

Buyers cannot touch a print, so your images do the selling. Show the art in a believable room, add a close-up of the detail, and include an image that lists the sizes and file ratios. Keep the scale honest so the buyer knows what they are getting.

For price, look at similar listings in your niche, work out Etsy's fees, and decide whether you sell single prints, sets or bundles. There is no single right price; test and adjust over time.

5. After the sale

Etsy delivers the files automatically once payment is confirmed, and the buyer can also download them later from their Purchases page. Many sellers send a short thank-you message with printing tips, such as which file to use for which frame and a reminder that local print shops or online printing services can print large sizes.

Reply quickly to customer messages. Most questions are about sizes, a file that will not open on a phone, or how to print. A saved reply for each common question saves a lot of time.

A note on licensing

Say in your description that the files are for personal use only, unless you choose to sell a commercial licence. Personal use usually means the buyer can print the art for their own home but cannot resell the file or the prints. Make sure you have the rights to everything you sell, including fonts, photos and any elements you did not create yourself.

Doing it faster

ArtworkPilot creates the print files, room mockups, size guide, product video and listing text (title, description and 13 tags) from one artwork, then sends the listing to Etsy as a draft through Etsy's official API so you can review it before publishing. A complete listing that takes about 1.5 hours by hand takes at most 10 minutes with ArtworkPilot.
