Selling AI-generated art on Etsy: what to disclose

What Etsy expects when you sell AI-assisted wall art, how to disclose it honestly in your listings, and the copyright and style cautions to keep in mind.

If you sell art made with the help of AI on Etsy, you need to disclose it: Etsy's rules ask sellers to say when items were created with AI tools, and AI-assisted designs fall under its “Designed by” category. Rules in this area change, so read Etsy's current Creativity Standards and House Rules before you list, and treat this guide as general information, not legal advice.

What Etsy's standards say, in general terms

Etsy has updated its Creativity Standards to describe how items on the marketplace are made. Items are grouped into categories such as made by the seller, designed by the seller, handpicked or sourced. At the time of writing (October 2026), Etsy places items created with AI tools under “Designed by”, meaning the seller's own design and prompts are involved, and asks sellers to disclose AI use in the listing.

Etsy may provide specific fields or options for this when you create a listing, and the wording may change. Check Etsy's help centre and seller policies for the current requirements.

How to disclose clearly

  • Use the disclosure options Etsy provides in the listing form, if any apply.
  • Add a short, plain sentence in the description, for example: “This artwork was created with the help of AI tools and then edited and prepared for print by me.”
  • Describe your own role honestly: prompting, selecting, editing, colour work, upscaling, preparing files.
  • Do not hide the information at the bottom of a long description. Clear disclosure builds trust and reduces disputes.
  • Keep your shop's About section consistent with your listings.

Copyright and style cautions

The legal position of AI-generated images differs between countries and is still developing. In some places purely AI-generated work may not be protected by copyright in the same way as human-made work. That can affect what you can stop others from copying, and it is worth getting proper advice if it matters for your business.

Be careful with what you generate:

  • Do not use the names of living artists or recognisable characters in prompts to copy their work or style closely.
  • Avoid trademarks, logos, brand names and famous characters.
  • Avoid real people's likenesses without permission.
  • Check every image for accidental copies of existing artwork, text or signatures.
  • Read the terms of the AI tool you use, including what it allows for commercial use.

Etsy can remove listings that break its policies or infringe someone else's rights, whether or not AI was used.

Quality still matters

AI images often need work before they are good prints: fixing hands and small details, cleaning edges, correcting colours, and upscaling to a size that prints well at 300 PPI. Check every file at 100% zoom. Buyers judge the print on their wall, not the tool that made it.

No guarantees

Following Etsy's rules and disclosing honestly does not guarantee that a listing will stay up or sell. Policies change, and Etsy decides how they apply. Revisit the rules regularly and update older listings if the requirements change.

Doing it faster

ArtworkPilot prepares print files in every common ratio at 300 PPI, mockups and listing text, and sends the listing to Etsy as a draft through Etsy's official API, so you can add or check your AI disclosure before you publish.
